By Samiyah Walker and Kanyra Jenkins Hi my name is Kanyra and my interview partner is Samiyah. We are going to tell you about the remodeling of the auditorium. We went to different places around the school and asked the teachers, office attendants, and the carpenters about it. We seeked out answers for middle school because they wanted to know why the auditorium is being renovated. We hope it’s going to look like this: But, in reality, it’s just going to be refurbished. Ms. Ball, from the office, said she’s excited to see the outcome. She also said it’s going to be finished at the beginning of April. She also told us that they are updating the chairs. I went to ask the middle school teachers because I figured that they might have a thing or two to say. The math, social studies, and reading teachers said they would all like to see new chairs everywhere and want the auditorium to look very nice. I liked talking to the carpenters. They gave me some very detailed information. Mr. Shield, the carpenter, said he likes being a carpenter. He went to school at Hyde Park academy. They are renewing seats. He also said that it may take up to 2 months. There will be 450 chairs at most. They train new kids for this work and actually bring some in to do work. Mr. Andrew, the assistant carpenter, said he also likes being a carpenter. He went to Oak Forest High school. He hopes it’s going to look beautiful. He also works with a couple more guys. Both of them seem very nice and Bright scholars are looking forward to seeing what our auditorium looks like.

By Cristian Padilla and Ricardo Perez Have you heard rumors about a student lounge at Bright? Well, that’s true. Brightm School is planning to bring a student lounge for students with few demerits and good grades.
The lounge will be in the ex- music room. There’s going to be bean bags, a rug and hopefully a T.V, microwave, and refrigerator. There will be an assigned student council member monitoring the student lounge. You have to have no demerits and an assigned pass. It will be during lunch, recess and the intervention block. The maximum number of students allowed so far is 10. Right now we have bean bags that some student council members wrote a grant for. We also have tables, chairs and a rug. Once they get the microwave, refrigerator, T.V, and clean up, and get the materials then it will open up. By Christina Alba Have you ever wondered what the 8th graders were doing down stairs? Well the 8th graders were painting murals. Each group of 8th grade students were assigned a powerful woman to draw and paint. All of the women were important throughout history; they are all women of color. Now you might be asking why draw women instead of a man? Well if you’ve ever been down stairs, You may have seen that all the murals down stairs are men. We decided to draw women to demonstrate women helped build up this country equally. Six groups of 8th grade students were assigned a mural, including the big mural in the media hall ( soon to be called the mural hall). The women we painted were: Malala Yousafzai, Sonia Sotomayor, Michelle Obama, Maya Angelou, and Delores Huerta. All of these women are important in history, so we have decided to paint them. Now you may ask, why are the 8th graders even painting murals? Well, Dr. Sanders requested more artistic things in the hallway, so Mrs. Katzenbach decided to get the 8th graders involved in it. Mrs. Katzenbach could have chosen other grades such as the 6th and 7th graders, but she thought it would be a fun activity for the 8th grade. We have 6 small murals of women of color and one big mural with a large tree and a sun in the background. All the murals have a different color theme and express the different individuality the students who created them. The tree has keys hanging from it. The tree symbolizes “the keys to success”. We thought this would be a good message to the students because it inspires people and makes them want to live up to their potential and be successful. Coming soon, the murals should be hung up after report card pick-up. That way, the students’ parents can admire the artwork that 8th grade students have made and get to touch the murals before they are put up on the wall. This is a way for Bright to remember the class of 2017. By Zionna McMullen and Antania Lehmann Hello! It’s black history month. You have heard of Martin Luther King Jr., but have you heard about Langston Hughes? You haven’t heard, so let me tell you. Hughes was born February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. His parents divorced when he was a young child and his father moved to Mexico. He was raised by his grandmother until he was thirteen, when he moved to Lincoln, Illinois, to live with his mother and her husband. Langston was famous for his poems. A common theme in Langston’s poems is racism. He used different styles for his poems. Some of Langston’s poems were mostly Jazz, he included black folk rhythms in his work, and he ignored classical forms. He made a new poetry style for black culture. By Cristian Padilla Have you ever wondered why we wear uniforms? Well, I went to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade to see their opinions on school uniforms. I asked questions such as: “What would you prefer to wear instead of navy blue shirts?” and "What do you like about the uniforms?" What do you like about uniforms? “I like that we don’t have to wake up early in the morning to pick out an outfit.” - Christina What are your ideas on uniforms? “We should have on a red shirt, and black pants.” - Terell Do you like the uniform design? “I don’t like the colors and we should have V-necks.” - Tatiana How would you feel about getting rid of uniforms? “I would feel good because we wouldn’t have to wear the same colors everyday.” - Ricardo What type of shirt would you like for uniforms? “Instead of navy blue shirts, we should have a black or baby blue shirt.” - Ivan What type of pants would you like as uniform? “I would like to wear joggers instead of khaki pants.” -Ricardo. By Tatiana Bledsoe & Christina Alba Hey, you there! Do you want to know what your fellow peers think about our school Bright? I'm Tatiana and my partner Christina and I interviewed students from grades 4-7 to get our results. First, we began a whole group discussion with the 4th graders so they could tell us their opinion about the school. We asked students what rules they don't like at our school. Majority of the students said they don’t like the demerit system. Then, we asked a follow-up question about what they do like about the school. Many of the students replied that they like the activities they do in gym. Next, we went up to the 6th grade room. We asked the same questions about school rules . Most of them said they don’t like the demerits. We told them to explain more and they said that it was better before it and that they don’t like the new rules. Then, we interviewed students one by one. We interviewed a 6th grader name Maria. We asked her what she thinks about the school rules. She said that ‘’Sometimes the teachers can be a little too strict, but I know they are trying to help us’’. Then we asked her what does she like about our school. She said ‘’l do like that the teachers will try to help out and tell me what I am doing wrong’’. In the end, we learned a lot about how the students at Bright think about their school. We also did a small interview with the teachers about if they like the school rules. They said they do think the school rules are a "must have" and that they do agree with the rules that the principle makes. In conclusion this is what our students think about our school. It was very fun to do this interview with our kids. By Zionna McMullen Why do we work with technology? I went to the person who works with technology. Her name is Ms. Ball, and she is very good with technology. I interviewed her now and I am reporting it to you. Ms. Ball is very passionate when it comes to technology. I interviewed her because she is the queen of techology and she knows everything about technology. But how do she know all about techology? Why is there Technology? There is technology because you need it to do work. I like technology because I need to do homework and send emails to my teachers. I send emails because I need to find out homework or what did we have for work on days I missed from school. When I see my teachers on their laptops I feel very happy because they are putting in grades. By Terrel Payton & Ivan Reves We met with Bright’s new staff member Ms. Rodriguez. Her class is on the third floor. Her room number is number is 307. We interviewed her because she is a new teacher at this school. When she was a child she wanted to be a nurse. She went to Trinity Christian College. She currently attends Concordia University. Her favorite part of working at Bright is the funny things children say. Before she came to Bright she worked at Kerr and Whittier. Her hobbies are taking care of her two babies. Her job at Bright is a special education teacher. Thank you Ms. Rodriguez for agreeing to answer our questions. I hope that this article made you more familiar with our new staff member. By Kanyra Jenkins & Ricardo Perez The 2016 presidential election has been on all of our minds. Two media club writers, Kanyra Jenkins and Ricardo Perez, went class by class to see who each student would vote for if they could have voted for president. The information in the chart is what our reporters gathered based on the students from grades 1st through 8th. We interviewed 160 students. In general, most students said they would have voted for Hillary Clinton. Less students would have voted for Gary Johnson. I felt like students didn’t know who Jill Stein and Gary Johnson were. Jill Stein and Gary Johnson were from different parties. The parties most people know are the democrats and the republicans. In conclusion, the election didn’t go the way most students wanted it to go. By Samiyah WalkerWe have two candidates running for president: Donald J. Trump and Hillary Diane Clinton. Mr.Donald J. Trump is a republican and a businessman while Hillary clinton is a democrat and a politician. Hillary was also the first lady when her husband Bill Clinton was president.
At the most recent debate, both candidates spent 90 minutes attacking each other. One thing that stood out was when Donald Trump said he would keep the nation "in suspense" over whether or not he would accept the results of the election. No candidate ever said they wouldn’t accept the results if they lose before. This could be very dangerous. |
